In Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the kath-kuni and timber-bonded construction methods used alternating layers of wood and stone, developed for seismic resistance and cold. British hill stations such as Shimla and Darjeeling added colonial bungalow forms from the nineteenth century. The theme favours oak, stone, wool and iron within a mountain-natural palette, so a living room reads as cosy and robust, where highland materials and craft define a warm, sheltering room.
