Limewash Care & Maintenance in Singapore (The 10-Year Routine)
Authentic mineral limewash is the longest-lived wall finish you can put on a Singapore home — 8 to 12 years before a refresh, vs 3 to 5 for emulsion. But it cleans, scuffs, and ages differently from paint. Here is the exact routine that keeps a limewash wall beautiful through SG humidity, kids, and daily traffic.
Why limewash is easier than you think — and the one rule that matters
Limewash carries pigment through the surface, not on top of it. That is why it ages so beautifully: small scuffs sand back into the wall instead of looking like damage. The one absolute rule:
Never scrub a limewash wall. Abrasion lifts mineral pigment and leaves a permanent patch. Always dab.
Routine cleaning (every 2–3 months)
- Dry-dust top-to-bottom with a clean white microfibre cloth. In SG's still indoor air, this removes 90% of visible marks.
- For visible scuffs (skirting, switch surrounds), dab with a barely-damp microfibre cloth using cool water only.
- For oily marks, use a 1:50 mild pH-neutral soap dilution. Rinse with a second damp cloth. Air-dry.
Do not use: bleach, vinegar, ammonia, "magic erasers", melamine sponges, citrus cleaners, or any colored cleaning spray. Each of these reacts with the lime and will leave a permanent mark.
Touch-up: the 5-minute scuff repair
- Lightly buff the scuff with a clean, slightly damp natural sponge in a circular motion.
- If a slight patch remains, feather a single thin pass of leftover limewash (from your applicator's touch-up jar) using a soft brush in the same X-pattern as the original application.
- Wait 7 days for the new lime to carbonate before judging colour. Wet limewash always reads 2 shades darker than dry.
Every Pico X limewash job ships with a 250ml labelled touch-up jar from the same batch.
Singapore-specific risks
Humidity (84% average)
Within the first 4–8 weeks after application, condensation can wash uncured lime back off the wall. After that, humidity is a non-issue for limewash — the cured carbonate surface is more humidity-stable than emulsion paint.
Aircon condensate / wall sweating
Aircon units that drip or sweat against a limewash wall will leave a dark mineral trail. Service the unit; the trail itself usually wipes off with a damp cloth once the source is fixed.
Lizard droppings & geckos
Let the droppings dry fully, then flick off with a soft brush. Never wipe wet — it smears into the pigment.
Kids & pets
For high-traffic rooms (kids' rooms, hallways), ask your applicator about a fixative top-coat — adds a thin breathable sealer without changing the look.
When to re-coat (and when not to)
Properly applied mineral limewash in a Singapore HDB will look good for 8 to 12 years. You will typically refresh because tastes change, not because the wall fails.
- Year 0–3: No maintenance beyond dusting.
- Year 3–7: Spot touch-ups in high-traffic zones. 30 minutes once a year.
- Year 7–10: Consider a refresh coat of the same shade — From $600 per wall.
- Year 10+: Full re-coat or shade change. No primer needed for a same-product refresh.
When to call us
- Visible damp patches or salts (efflorescence). The wall behind the limewash has a moisture issue.
- You tried scrubbing and now there is a lighter patch. Needs a feathered limewash touch-up.
- You want to change shade or paint over limewash. Limewash needs a specific bonding primer. WhatsApp a photo to 8751 5146 first.
