History and meaning

Ottoman Interior draws on the decorative arts of the Ottoman Empire, which from the fifteenth to the early twentieth century developed a refined court style across Anatolia, the Balkans and the Arab lands. Iznik tilework, produced from the fifteenth century and peaking in the sixteenth under the architect Mimar Sinan, defined interiors with cobalt, turquoise and floral arabesque. The aesthetic also drew on plush upholstery, divan seating and dark marble. The theme favours brass, velvet and dark marble within a jewel-toned palette, so a living room reads as glamorous and geometric, rooted in Ottoman court tradition.
