Shabby Chic was named and popularised by the British-born designer Rachel Ashwell, who opened her first store in Santa Monica, California, in 1989. The style combined distressed, painted vintage furniture with pale, romantic textiles — washed linen, faded florals and soft rose — drawing on English country-house tradition and French-provincial romanticism. It spread widely through Ashwell's books and stores in the 1990s, and its influence persists in rooms that value age, softness and patina. Using velvet, dark wood and antique brass within a rose-and-plum palette, a living room reads as romantic and cocooning rather than pristine or modern.
