Shabby Chic Soft / Airy Wellness Painting Theme

Shabby Chic Soft pairs Gush Pinky Swear (PI000A) on the main walls with a Raffles Cherry Blossom limewash feature wall — a warm-cool, high-contrast rose and plum scheme that feels romantic, cocooning. It suits the bedroom or powder room, and works with velvet, dark wood, antique brass. Its mixed undertone shifts with the light, so 4000K neutral white keeps both colours honest. Shabby Chic was named and popularised by the British-born designer Rachel Ashwell, who opened her first store in Santa Monica, California, in 1989.

Design history

History and meaning

Shabby Chic was named and popularised by the British-born designer Rachel Ashwell, who opened her first store in Santa Monica, California, in 1989. The style combined distressed, painted vintage furniture with pale, romantic textiles — washed linen, faded florals and soft rose — drawing on English country-house tradition and French-provincial romanticism. It spread widely through Ashwell's books and stores in the 1990s, and its influence persists in rooms that value age, softness and patina. Using velvet, dark wood and antique brass within a rose-and-plum palette, a living room reads as romantic and cocooning rather than pristine or modern.

What it represents: It represents romantic, cocooning character through a rose and plum palette and the recognisable visual language of Shabby Chic.

Why it works here: Here, the smooth Gush walls and softly textured Raffles limewash give velvet, dark wood, antique brass a coherent backdrop, making the theme practical for the home.

How it feels at home

Pinky Swear on the main walls keeps the Shabby Chic scheme lighter, airier and practical for bedroom / powder room. Cherry Blossom as the Raffles R.LIMEWASH feature wall gives a subtle mineral layer that fits velvet, dark wood, antique brass. The cool cast helps reduce visual heat and keeps daylight feeling clear, while the limewashed focal wall adds calm depth without visual clutter.
