Problem Solved
HDB Mould & Humidity Paint Solutions: Stop It Coming Back
If mould keeps returning to the same HDB wall after every repaint, the paint isn't the problem — the prep is. Here's what actually stops it, and what's just covering it up.
Why HDB walls grow mould
Singapore averages 84% humidity. Three combinations cause 95% of HDB mould:
- Bathroom ceiling. Hot shower steam condenses on cool ceiling. Spores colonise within 6 months without anti-mould paint.
- Wall behind wardrobe / sofa. No air circulation; surface temperature drops, condensation forms.
- Wall under window AC unit. Condensate drips onto wall during cycling.
Why a normal repaint doesn't fix it
Standard emulsion sits on the surface. Mould spores below are still alive — they break through within months.
The 4-step fix that lasts
- Kill the spores. Anti-mould wash (sodium hypochlorite + biocide). Dwell 30 min, scrub, rinse, dry overnight.
- Seal the surface. Anti-fungal primer (Nippon Anti-Mould Sealer or BM Fresh Start).
- Antimicrobial paint. Two coats of Breathe Antimicrobial, BM Aura Bath & Spa, or Nippon Anti-Mould Plus.
- Fix the source. If leak from upstairs, no paint will hold — coordinate with HDB on common-area issues.
Bathroom ceilings specifically
3-step job: anti-mould wash, anti-fungal primer, two coats bathroom-grade paint (BM Aura Bath & Spa). For active leaks from upstairs, layer in PU waterproofing first.
Pricing
- Anti-mould treatment single bathroom ceiling: From $180
- Bedroom wall (single wall, full treatment): From $280
- Whole-flat anti-mould upgrade: add From $250 on top of standard HDB pricing
