Limewash on the Ceiling: Singapore's Cocoon Effect, Done Properly
Wrapping the ceiling in limewash dissolves the wall–ceiling line and turns a room into a cocoon. It is one of the most striking limewash applications — and one of the easiest to get wrong in a Singapore HDB with a 2.6m ceiling.
The honest answer: most SG ceilings should stay plain white
Limewash on the ceiling is beautiful in two specific situations and a compromise everywhere else. Before booking it, run through these three questions.
1. How tall is the ceiling?
- ≤2.6m (standard HDB BTO). Limewash ceiling drops perceived ceiling height by another 10–15cm visually. The room can feel oppressive. We talk most clients out of this.
- 2.7–2.9m (most condos, older HDB). Works if the shade stays in the warm-white / cream family.
- 3.0m+ (high-ceiling condos, lofts, maisonettes). The right canvas. Limewash ceiling looks intentional and immersive.
2. Which room?
- Master bedroom. The most-requested ceiling limewash room.
- Reading nook / study. Cocoon effect supports concentration.
- Living room. Risky in HDB. Works in condos with tall ceilings or skylights.
- Hallway, corridor, kitchen, bathroom. Almost always wrong. Keep ceilings plain.
3. Which shade?
Ceilings receive almost no direct light, so they always read 2 shades darker than the walls.
- Want the ceiling to disappear into the walls? Use the same shade as the walls.
- Want a softer wash without losing height? Pick a ceiling shade one step lighter than the walls.
- Want maximum drama? Charcoal, deep olive, or terracotta ceiling — only in rooms with 3m+ ceiling.
Ceiling limewash pricing (2026)
Ceiling limewash costs roughly 1.4× the same square metre on a wall — overhead application is slower and uses more product.
- HDB master bedroom ceiling (~12 m²): From $1,400
- HDB living room ceiling (~22 m²): From $2,400
- Condo master bedroom ceiling, standard height: From $1,800
- Condo living room ceiling, 3m+ height: From $3,200
- Walls + ceiling combined (master bedroom, cocoon): From $2,800 HDB / $3,800 condo
Application notes — what to expect
- 2-day minimum. Ceiling needs a full day to dry between coats.
- Heavy masking. All wall tops, cornices, light fittings, fans, and aircon trunking get wrapped.
- Fan & aircon off. Air movement during the wet phase causes uneven carbonation.
- Lighting matters more than wall colour. Switch to warm-temperature bulbs (2700K–3000K).
Alternatives we sometimes recommend instead
- Walls + cornice in limewash, plain ceiling. Our most common compromise for HDB.
- Limewash on one ceiling section (e.g. only above the bed or dining table).
- Limewash walls + low-VOC matte white ceiling in the same warmth. 95% of the cocoon feel, none of the height penalty.
